CEMI hosts 4th Annual General Meeting
On October 12th, 2011, CEMI hosted its 4th AGM and presented four of its strategic research programs: GeoRisk, Ventilation on Demand, the Rio Tinto Centre for Underground Mine Construction, and Smart Underground Monitoring and Integrated Technologies (SUMIT) for Deep Mining which highlighted technical achievements and work in progress. ORF INVESTS $2.24 MILLION into SUMIT PROGRAM
On July 27th, 2011, the provincial government announced it's supporting the mining research project called, "SUMIT" with an investment of $2.24 million from the Ministry of Research and Innovation's Ontario Research Fund-Research Excellence program (ORF-RE). Laurentian University will be working with colleagues at the University of Toronto and Queen's University in a broad research effort to improve both safety and efficiency in deep mining. CEMI has been instrumental in the design of the research effort and will play a key role in ensuring its successful implementation.
Bartolucci announces $823,000 in funding for new Chair
On July 26th, 2011, CEMI received $823,000 in funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation's Emerging Technology Program to go toward a research chair for holistic mining practices. Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci made the official announcement and welcomed the new Chair, Douglas Morrison to the position.
City of Greater Sudbury supports an Innovation & Prosperity Office at CEMI
On January 13th, 2011, the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) announced its support of the establishment of an Innovation & Prosperity Office (IPO) at CEMI. The GSDC has contributed start-up funds in the amount of $75,000 to establish an IPO that will aid in placing Greater Sudbury on the international map for mining research excellence by expanding the opportunities, ideas, and funding, as well as increasing the number of highly-skilled people coming to Greater Sudbury.
Signing of Rio Tinto and CEMI agreement to establish a new centre in Sudbury Canada
On December 6th, 2010, new partners Rio Tinto and the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) celebrated the official signing of an agreement that will showcase CEMI's capabilities to the world.
Rio Tinto creates a new $10 million centre at CEMI
On November 25th, 2010, Rio Tinto announced the establishment of the Rio Tinto Centre for Underground Mine Construction (RTC-UMC) at the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Rio Tinto will be investing $10 million dollars over five years to undertake research at the centre.
Expanding CEMI's mandate for excellence in mining innovation
September 8, 2010 – the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), held its third Annual General Meeting (AGM) which highlighted the significant progress made by the organization in advancing mineral exploration and mining-related research during the past year. CEMI proudly announced that mining veteran, Doug Morrison will be joining the CEMI team as the Deputy Director. Mr. Morrison will begin his duties on November 1st, 2010.
CEMI honours award-winning Laurentian Engineering Students
May 6th, 2010 – Ten students attended a luncheon in their honour hosted by CEMI for demonstrating leadership and excellence in engineering. Their accomplishments included a first place award in the Ontario Engineering Competition and the Canadian Engineering Competition, as well as the Kossatz Scholarship and Stantec/McIntosh Engineering Scholarship.
CEMI welcomes new Board members at AGM
September 23, 2009 – CEMI held its second Annual General Meeting (AGM) at which time its 2009 Annual Report was released. CEMI announced that three new board members were elected to its Board of Directors. Mr. Warren Holmes, Chairman Nuinsco Resources; Ms. Suzanne Herbert, former Deputy Minister, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines for Ontario; and Dr. Nigel Smith, Director of the SNOLAB, have kindly agreed to take up these positions. With their input, the Board will expand its reach and develop a growth and sustainability plan for CEMI.
Industry Canada invests $4,250,600 in CEMI Ventilation on Demand Project
August 24, 2009 – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a multi-million dollar Government of Canada investment, aimed at providing a solid foundation for economic recovery and development efforts across Northern Ontario.

Mining research centres join forces
August 22, 2008 – Four mining research centres: CAMIRO, CEMI, MASHA, and MIRARCO — which recently relocated to the 4th floor of the Willet Green Miller Centre — held an open house demonstrating activities of the newly formed mining research cluster.

Mark Cutifani Appreciation Event
A final celebration was held on Thursday, September 6th for a man who greatly deserved the recognition, as friends in industry and the community gathered to toast Mark Cutifani at an appreciation event held for the former Chief Operating Officer at CVRD Inco.
Lectures on Extraterrestrial Life
Selected scientists and students from around the world interested in the possibility of finding life on other planets will meet in Sudbury, from September 18 to 20, for a workshop entitled Biosignatures in Ancient Rocks.
$8M to LU mining research
March 8, 2007 – Sudbury MPP the Hon. Rick Bartolucci announced on behalf of the Ontario Government that they are investing $8 million to support mine productivity and safety research at Laurentian University. The funding which flows through the government's Ontario Research Fund (ORF) will go toward research that will lead to safer, more productive mining, under the Productivity Enhancement and Risk Management for Underground Construction and Mining (PERM) initiative led by Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO).

Xstrata Nickel Invests $5 million in CEMI
December 18, 2006 – Xstrata Nickel announced today that it has invested $5 million in the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) at Laurentian University. CEMI proposed at Laurentian University
December 16, 2005 – Laurentian University is pleased to announce that plans for a Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) on the University campus have been launched. This initiative is the principal recommendation made in a business plan completed by the Ontario Mineral Industry Cluster Council (OMICC) in May 2005.
