SME-led Initiatives
Northern Ontario is home to many firms that service and support the mining industry in and from the North, in Canada and around the world. These companies have become an integral part of the success of the mining companies they service. Many are start-up companies with an idea and the drive to bring innovation to fruition, but lack research capacity. Others have a product but need to build up a collaboration matrix to bring it into the mining industry.
CEMI, for its part, reviews SME projects and funds a portion of the development costs, and places suppliers and customers in contact with each other to the benefit of both.
The value derived from this program is in the form of local service and supplier support. They are responsive to the mining industry's needs, tailor their products and services to fill niches that other companies do not participate in. Additionally, they build capacity in the form of employment and knowledge, both of which are important to sustaining mining in Canada.
