Mine Design to Extract Optimal Mining Value

Glenn Lyle
Project Lead: Glenn Lyle, P.Eng., M.Sc.
R&D Program Director

Purpose

Create a value driven best practice handbook for underground hard-rock mine design. www.minedesignwiki.org.

You can contribute!

We invite consultants, members of academia and industry, as well as recent retirees, who are interested in making a valuable contribution and learning in the process, to contribute their experience and expertise to the writing of one or more sections for the new collaborative online handbook.

Changing how we communicate information and knowledge.

Using the same community model that has allowed Wikipedia to become one of the most successful and valued general information sources, the Mine Design Handbook - Wiki Edition is bringing together the industry's thought leaders to improve the sharing of mine design expertise.

Queens

Driven by the need to capture and build on the years of experience within the industry, the Mine Design Handbook provides a means of combining journal quality reference material with an interactive community.

Outcomes
  • Allow the best practices to be continually updated
  • Record and preserve the experience of professionals within our industry
  • Aid the training of young professionals during both their university and professional years
  • Emphasize best practices in mine design and the preservation of value in the design process
  • Highlight those gaps within mine design that would benefit from the development of new tools or further research
  • Allow for the discussion of concepts and practices using the capabilities of the wiki structure
  • Combine journal quality reference material with the experience of professionals within our industry

Table of Contents

ChapterDescription
1

The general environment in which the mine exists.
The mine design must meet conditions that go beyond the actual orebody. Covers the company objectives and the social/environmental commitments.

2

Stages of mine planning
The complexity of the design will be a function of the stage of evaluation.

3

Information required for mine design
Describes the information required before the work on the mine design can proceed.

4

Selection of Mining Method
Trade-off analyses must be conducted to determine the most appropriate method(s) to use for the deposit.

5

Mine Design
Covers the detailed mine design in enough detail to determine the operating and capital costs.

6

Infrastructure Design
The trade-off analyses required to determine material movement and services design in enough detail to determine the operating and capital cost.

7

Simulation
Simulation is a relatively new tool that can be used to access the risks associated with a given design and to help develop strategies to mitigate the risks. Simulation can be used in each step of the mine design.

8

Scheduling
Develop a mine plan covering development and production, determine the critical path during the construction, and ramp-up to full production.

9

Economic and risk analysis
The cash flows of the mine are calculated, sensitivity and risk analysis undertaken, description of the hill of value concept and best practices to preserve ore value.

10

Metrics
Discusses the common metrics used in the design and those that should be used in the operation to ensure preservation of ore value.
