Brief Biography

Damien holds a BSc. (Hons.) degree from University College Dublin, Ireland (1978) and an MSc. in Economic Geology from Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada (1982).

He has held progressively more responsible positions in mine and exploration geology throughout his career - first with Pamour Porcupine Mines (a Noranda-Group company) between 1981-1989 and with Falconbridge (now Xstrata Canada) - from 1989 until present.

Before joining CEMI as an R&D Program Director in 2008, Damien spent 3 years on secondment from Xstrata to the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Mines and Minerals Division, as a Senior Advisor to the Assistant Deputy Minister on matters related to mineral exploration/mining policy. He was the recipient of the PRAISE award in recognition of his work with the Ministry: specifically, the development of a now widely used First Nations Notification Tool. He also spearheaded other major projects while at the Ministry including: Ontario's first One-Window Coordination Process for Mineral Sector Permits and Approvals, a Risk-Based Approach to Mineral Sector Permitting and Approvals as well as a new and updated marketing strategy for the Mines and Minerals Division.

Damien is a former president of the Geological Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIMM) and company director of First Nickel Inc.- a junior nickel exploration/mining company (TSX).

He is a recipient of the CIM Fellowship Award, awarded in recognition of "contributions to the Canadian minerals industry and to the CIM," and is a registered Professional Geoscientist in the Province of Ontario.
